Police have taken away a man with a walking stick following an incident at the Wellgate Shopping Centre this afternoon.
At least three large police SUVs were seen close to the Ladywell junction, with more spotted on Victoria Road and outside the Bliss bridal shop at the foot of the Hilltown.
Shoppers coming out of the centre said there were police standing guard on the third-floor near the library steps while a police sergeant was patrolling the floors.
The matter came to a peaceful conclusion after a man with a walking aid was led to police vehicle on Victoria Road.
One shopper said: “There was a massive police presence on Victoria Street, we had three police jeeps on the junction of Ladywell Avenue with officers still inside.
“As I walked down Victoria Road there was police parked at the bus stops, one guy said officers entered the shopping centre.
“When I got inside there was cops standing guard at the foot of the library stairs and additional officers at the Citizen Advice Bureau building within the centre.
“It was all a bit odd to see such a massive police response and no area appeared to be cordoned off as far as I could see.”
One bus passenger said a man – described as being in his late thirties – was escorted away by police before the police left the area shortly before 1pm.
They said: “The guy didn’t look to be any distress he was accompanied by a female three officers approached him and he didn’t show any resistance.
“It didn’t appear he was arrested but as soon as he was taken away all the police left the area.”
A police spokeswoman said: “A man was arrested on warrant.”
