The Tele’s report on the St Mirren incident had me thinking back.
There has always been bad blood between these sets of fans. It stems from 1977 when United were at Paisley for a cup tie. Alex Ferguson was the St Mirren manager.
There was a right rammy at the old Love Street ground and some fans were hurt in the melee. Buses also came under attack.
Lo and behold, the first game of the next season had the Saints coming to Tannadice.
The Shed boys were out for revenge and headed for Gussie Park where the away fans’ buses were.
But unlike the Paisley cops, Dundee’s finest knew the score and blocked their way.
Unfortunately, having been unable to wreak revenge, several hundred Shed boys charged towards the city centre causing havoc – arrests followed and a few were jailed.
A harsh lesson learned for all concerned.
