Staff at a Dundee city centre shoe shop which closed its doors suddenly have claimed they’re still in the process of claiming back wages.
Garage Shoes, which had traded in the Overgate centre for more than 15 years, shut after the company went into administration.
It comes after recent announcements about the pending closures of the Disney, Burton and Dorothy Perkins stores in the city centre.
Six members of staff were left without jobs when the shoe chain, which also had shops in Glasgow and Stirling, closed down. Other Garage stores remain open in England, but are under different ownership.
The Dundee store has been taken on by administrators Clark Business Recovery.
Lisa Jones, 47, who used to work as an area manager for the Scottish shops, said she first became aware of the issue when staff from head office started removing items from the Glasgow store.
She advised staff in Dundee to close the store immediately, adding: “They owed the centre and staff money so I wanted to give them some warning.”
Tracy Bannister, 30, who worked at the store for six years in Dundee, told the Tele: “When I told the staff I felt awful. Everyone was devastated.
“We were advised by senior team members that we would be paid in due course but when the company went into liquidation, we never even received our pay from the last week of work.
“We are now in the process of claiming it back from the Government — but it has been very disappointing the way the closure has been managed.”
Overgate centre manager Malcolm Angus said: “Garage Shoes unfortunately went into administration and closed.
“We currently have six void units of which we have strong interest in two, and another two are unfortunately in the hands of administrators.
“Overgate and its leasing management team are pro-actively seeking suitable and diverse retailers to bolster our retail line-up in a challenging market. With the city progressing with development, we are confident Overgate will continue to offer an excellent retail line-up.”
Clark Business Recovery hadn’t responded to a request for comment at the time of going to press.
