Detailed plans and drawings for Dundee’s new £17 million sports centre have been released.
The Regional Performance Centre for Sport in the city’s Caird Park will provide a major and significant venue for sport in Tayside.
Located adjacent to it will be the Caird Park Training Ground which will become the training base for Dundee FC.
It’s hoped the centre and training ground will be ready for use in 2018. The Dark Blues currently use Manhattan Works and the Dundee University pitches at Riverside for training.
In a newly-published report, Dundee City Council said the primary aim of the project was to raise the profile of Dundee as a centre for excellence for sport and allow the city to develop as a top-class training centre.
The report said: “It’s anticipated that the centre will help to develop sport and physical activity opportunities for local communities as well as showcasing the city as a venue for tournaments, events and training camps.
“It is hoped to create a facility that will attract and foster talent in an aspirational environment.”
The report adds that the sports to be catered for will include badminton, basketball, disability sports, football, netball, rugby, volleyball, athletics, golf and track cycling.
The performance centre will include a hub building with an eight-court sports hall, a performance suite, sports science suite, administration and conference facilities and a café.
There will be a full size indoor 3G football pitch as well as full-size outdoor 3G rugby and football pitches.
The facilities will also include a grass community football pitch, upgraded athletics track, an indoor athletics training building, upgraded velodrome and an energy centre.
The Caird Park training ground will include a full size outdoor 3G football pitch, three grass football pitches and a changing pavilion.
