Police are continuing to investigate a sex attack in Dundee city centre.
The probe follows reports that a person was sexually assaulted in St Paul’s Court in the early hours of Monday.
Police have not confirmed if the victim was male or female or whether they sustained any injuries.
A spokesman said: “Police Scotland is investigating a report of a sexual assault which took place in St Paul’s Court, which is a lane that runs between the Seagate and the Murraygate, Dundee, during the early hours of Monday.
“Inquiries are at an early stage and we would appeal to anyone who was in this area late on Sunday into the early hours of Monday who saw or heard anything which they believe may be of interest to call us on 101 or speak to any police officer. Our reference is incident 0172 of May 21.”
Workers at nearby shops said they first became aware of the incident when they tried to use the alleyway.
One said: “Although we have been asking, no one was able to give us any idea what was going on.”
A woman said: “I usually walk that way to get to work, but when I tried to go that way police stopped me.
“The lane was completely sealed off by police.
“They weren’t letting anyone up or down.”
One pub-goer said: “I was in the lane about an hour and a half before the police arrived.
“I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary at all.
“The next thing I knew, there were police officers at both ends of the lane.
“They wouldn’t let anybody up or down. It was obvious that something had happened there however.”
A local resident said that no one seemed to know what had happened.
He said: “I live very close to the area the police have sealed off but the first I knew about it was when I left my home and saw police at both ends of the lane.
“I had to ask one of the officers to lift the police tape to let me out.
“I have no idea at all what happened. I never heard or saw a thing.”
Another woman, whose property looks over the lane, said: “I’m shocked to hear about this.
“The first we knew about what had happened was when we saw the area roped off.”
