Shock as falling Dundee city centre shop sign ‘just missed’ child

A shocked shopper has told of the moment a sign fell from a city centre business and narrowly missed a passing child.

The sign fell from the first floor of Slaters, in High Street, on to the walkway below.

Charlaine Mellor, who was standing near the store when the sign fell to the ground around 1pm on Friday, said the sign nearly landed on a child who was walking up the street with a man.

She said: “I was just across from where it happened.

“I heard a big bang then I heard a woman shout ‘oh my God’.

“It just missed a man with a wee child.”

Charlaine said that the pair seemed unshaken despite their narrow miss and continued to make their way up the street, while other shocked passersby looked on.

Members of the store’s management team then came out to clean up the smashed sign.

The Tele contacted the store’s assistant manager, but he declined to comment.
