It’s going to be no illusion when one of the leading stars of the ’80s takes the audience at this year’s Rewind Festival at Scone on a “musical escape”.
Leee John, from Imagination, is inviting festival-goers to go on a journey of escapism during his set at Rewind Scotland from July 20-22.
In an interview with the Tele, Leee said he was looking forward to playing a selection of the group’s old hits, including Just an Illusion, Flashback and Body Talk.
Leee, 60, said: “The audience are coming along wanting to hear the old songs but I’m also hoping to be able to get a chance to bring in one or two of my newer hits.
“Rewind is all about the music of the ’80s and that’s what we will play but I’d also love to take the audience on a journey of escapism through musicality.
“With the music of Imagination an audience can escape for a little while and just enjoy the show before having to come back to earth and reality.”
Leee said the group members were veterans of Rewind, having played at many over the last 10 years, including at Scone.
Leee said: “I love Rewind. I find it very exciting to engage with the audiences.
“What we are seeing now are much younger people.
“We even see teenagers coming along with their parents and grandparents, which is great.
“I’m very much involved with working with young people in London and it’s great our music is also reaching out to new generations.
“A lot of young people are living disadvantaged lives and there is a lot of crime affecting young people.
“I want to get involved in doing something about that and one way I can is through my music.
“I have just written a new single, Police And Thieves, which talks about this.
“My music now is keeping up with the times.
“Music can be a very dynamic way of dealing with issues and of getting people to take responsibility for our friends and neighbours.”
Leee’s songwriting has come a long way from the very first song he ever wrote.
He said: “It was while I was sitting at my mum’s kitchen table in Hackney that I came up with Body Talk.
“I was only 16 and experiencing my first love affair. I recorded the song on a little cassette and had no idea what would happen next.
“You can imagine my excitement when I then heard it on Radio London.
“It was playing on a radio somewhere when I heard it.
“I stuck my head out the window and there it was. I was so ecstatic.
“After that everything began to get sexy.”
Leee and Imagination went from strength to strength and went on to have hits in 28 countries, earning four platinum discs, nine gold discs and more than a dozen silver discs around the world between 1981 and 1983.
The group have toured and had hits ever since, including two number ones in the soul charts last year.
