Visitors will get free access to some of Dundee’s top attractions next month as the official Doors Open Day programme is revealed.
Venues across the city will open up on September 8 and 9, allowing people a behind-the-scenes look into some of the city’s hidden histories.
Among places joining the programme for the first time is Avertical World in Blinshall Street, Tayside’s only dedicated indoor climbing centre.
Morgan Academy – which is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year – will also be taking part in the event.
Following a catastrophic fire in 2001, the school had an internal rebuild and reopened in August 2004.
The building has remained an iconic landmark of Stobswell since its grand opening in 1868.
Dundee University will be putting on a new guided tour of Hawkhill House.
Behind Duncan of Jordanstone College, the farmhouse is now home to the stores and offices of the university’s museum services.
Other venues including Dundee Sheriff Court are making their return to the event after a break.
Grove Academy is showcasing its archive material from the First World War and Second World War, with research material about former pupils who lost their lives during the conflicts being displayed.
Lord Provost Ian Borthwick said the event is a “significant” date in the calendar for the City of Discovery.
He said: “It is a great opportunity for the public to see what goes on behind the scenes.
“We have so many public buildings but never know what goes on behind it.
“I have visited a number of these events and hope it is a success.
“I was visiting a few former pupils of Morgan Academy last year. The school has a great affinity with its pupils and the restoration has been remarkable.”
Councillor Borthwick said the event could also have a positive effect on local businesses.
“I think it welcomes people and opens up the city to new people,” he said.
“It also helps local businesses because it stimulates people’s interest in the city.
“We are so used to passing these buildings – but events like these help us learn to appreciate them.”
