British holidaymakers were left terrified over a possible terror attack when a woman carrying an air rifle paraded around a Spanish holiday resort.
Images shared on social media show sunbathing tourists ducking and looking concerned as the woman walked around an outdoor swimming pool at Oasis Village in Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands on Tuesday.
However, it has emerged that the woman was an employee of the resort’s activities team who was advertising a shooting activity to hotel guests.
Reports say that some guests ran for cover behind walls and in the hotel reception when they saw the woman, fearing a possible attack.
A spokeswoman at Oasis Village said: “There was no incident. We have security that respond to even the smallest disturbance and everything is logged.
“The representative is clearly wearing a uniform saying Sunny Animation and the guests she spoke to were happy.”
All areas of Spain are currently under a general threat from international terrorism alert and Government travel advice warns holidaymakers that tourist destinations could be targets for attacks.
It also states that there is a “heightened threat” of terrorist attacks worldwide against British nationals in particular and warns all visitors to the country to be vigilant, even though attacks are rare.
While there was no threat of terrorist activity on this occasion, some have said that the Sunny Animation representative’s decision to walk around carrying the rifle was irresponsible, considering current warnings.
A spokesman from tour operator group Monarch, which sends guests to the Oasis Village resort, said: “We don’t believe this is a suitable way to encourage participation in this resort activity.”
