Police slam social media speculation after saying assault may have taken place at local bus station

Police have admitted that an assault took place at a local bus station last night.

Tayside cops initially said in a statement that a man had fallen in an incident at Arbroath Bus Station at 6.30pm, but now say he may have been assaulted.

The latest statement also slams social media speculation regarding the incident.

It said: “A man was found to be intoxicated and bleeding within the waiting room at the bus station.

“Initial enquiries, along with the man’s own recollection of events, indicated that he had fallen and injured himself.

“However, it has since come to our attention that this man may have been assaulted, and we have already spoken with a number of persons who may have been involved.

“We are also aware of a lot of speculation on local social media which is unhelpful, particularly if names are being mentioned of persons who may or may not be involved.

“If you saw what happened or have any other relevant information that could help us investigate this incident, please contact us on 101 or speak to any police officer.

“Information can also be given anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111. Our reference is incident 3243 of 24th January.”
