Police probe suspicious fire at Dundee building popular with urban explorers

Police say they are treating a fire at the former Strathmartine Hospital last night as suspicious.

Officers and firefighters attended a blaze at the building last night at 9.20pm.

A police statement said: “Police Scotland can confirm that it attended at the former Strathmartine Hospital last night (11th December) along with Scottish Fire and Rescue Service in response to a fire reported in one of the derelict buildings.

“No persons were within. The fire is being treated as suspicious and an investigation is being conducted.”

The Tele has reported previously about vandalism and fires that have plagued the former hospital for folk with learning disabilities since it closed in 2003.

Last month we showed video of some urban explorers inside the crumbling buildings on the site.

Monifieth & Sidlaw councillor Craig Fotheringham slammed the actions of the teenagers in the video.

He said: “The former Strathmartine Hospital site is regularly entered, vandalised and set alight and it beggars belief the sense of some people and their motives for doing so.”
