VIDEO: Police close Dundee street amid fire at gym and market building

Fire crews were called to tackle a blaze in the Hilltown area of Dundee.

The blaze was reported on Main Street with smoke billowing from the top of the Hilltown Indoor Market building around 6pm.

Huge flames could be seen piercing through the roof of the building as firefighters hosed water from above using an aerial appliance.

Gym goers at the neighbouring Fit4Less gym were reportedly told to evacuate the premises.

Police closed off the road to allow firefighters to tackle the blaze and to keep the public at bay.

The incident is the third major fire in the city in three days. On Monday animals were killed after a huge blaze at a farm on the edge of Dundee before Braeview Academy was gutted last night.

A police statement said: “Police Scotland are currently dealing with a fire at Dundee Market, Main Street Dundee.

“There are presently road closures at Thistle Street, Main Street, Dens Road and Isla Street. The public are advised to avoid the area until further notice.”
