Plans have been approved for a new twin operating theatre at Tayside Children’s Hospital.
The hospital is based at Ninewells and the new theatre suite will allow more children to have their surgery in a dedicated, specially-designed facility.
The Tele reported in November that a planning application had been lodged with the city council after years of fundraising.
With the plans having now been given the go-ahead, construction work is expected to start in the summer and will last about a year.
NHS Tayside chief executive Grant Archibald said: “We are extremely pleased to see progress being made in the new children’s theatre suite project.
“This dedicated facility will mean that many more children will now be cared for in a child-friendly environment which has been designed by putting them at the heart of their care.”
The cost of the project is estimated to be £6.5 million, with the Archie Foundation contributing £2m towards the total thanks to various fundraising initiatives.
A planning statement submitted to the council said: “The majority of the works involve refurbishing and remodelling an area of the existing hospital on level four to the south-east of the existing maternity block.
“This would include the provision of a recovery ward which would open out into the existing courtyard, where new decking and landscaping is proposed.”
The suite will consist of two paediatric theatres with pre and post-operative areas, including a 10-bed ward.
Artists’ impressions published as part of the application show a colourful exterior.
The new building will include play areas, assisted bathing zones for children with additional needs, dedicated side rooms for children who need extra privacy and two operating theatres.
There will also be quiet rooms and special waiting rooms for parents.
