A lifeboat crew was called into action at a Tayside beach after a sperm whale was washed up on the sand.
The coastguard requested the launch of Broughty Ferry Lifeboat at around 9pm yesterday, following reports of a young whale beached at Barry Buddon, near Carnoustie.

Members of the Broughty crew were already on station after exercise and, as a result, the inshore lifeboat was launched within a minute.
Experts measured the whale to be around 40ft-long, around the size of a bus.
Working alongside British Divers, Marine Life Rescue and Coastguard teams, nothing could be done to help the whale, and it was determined that the animal had died.
