Dundee could soon have a Perth-style “Motor Mile” to call its own, amid speculation about the future of a derelict warehouse in the city.
As reported earlier this week, the former Tesco distribution centre at Baird Avenue, beside the dual carriageway, was snapped up by Clowes Developments, also known as CWC Group, at the end of last year for an undisclosed sum.
It has now emerged that the warehouse is scheduled for demolition as per Clowes’ request, with work now under way on bringing down the building.
The demolition is expected to take 16 weeks from start to finish, following which a new client will be sought for the site.
When contacted by the Tele today, a spokesman for Clowes said that the company was speaking with a number of potential clients about the site’s future.
However, the firm also hinted that the site could soon be home to another car dealership.
The spokesman said: “We’ve had a number of trade counters in touch who have requirements in the Dundee area.
“While there is nothing concrete, look what’s around the site — it could be something like that.”
Strathmartine councillor Kevin Keenan said the Kingsway had become the area of choice for car dealerships in recent years.
He said: “I have been watching the various car dealerships coming to the area over the years.
“I was disappointed to see workers stripping cladding from the building when I was passing the other day, as we need to attract manufacturing back to the city — and that was a good site.
“However, it will be interesting to see what develops there.”
At present, there are a number of dealerships on the half-mile Kingsway corridor between the Clepington and Coupar Angus roundabouts.
These include the Peter Vardy Carstore on the site of the former Valentines factory, alongside an Arnold Clark-operated Mercedes-Benz dealership.
John Clark Motor Group also operates Specialist Cars Nissan on Telford Road, BMW and Mini on Rutherford Road and Audi at the Clepington Roundabout.
The company is currently building a £10 million complex on Kings Cross Road that will rehouse the BMW and Mini dealership and also bring a Jaguar Land Rover franchise to the city.
