A mum’s poignant portrait of her late daughter has won an online photography competition after wowing fellow snappers around the world.
Jane Head, 61, captured the stunning shot of daughter Katie Gabrielle in autumn 2016, before the 22-year-old took her life in November last year.
The image, titled A Ray Of Light From Heaven, was captured at Ardestie Earth House, north of Monifieth.
Jane, from Newbigging, said she had stumbled across the images of the former Carnoustie High School pupil a couple of weeks ago, before submitting it onto website ViewBug.
The creative community website allows professional and amateur photographers to submit pictures that are critiqued and voted for by members.
Amateur photographer Jane said she was stunned when the image was awarded special recognition.
She scooped the Peer Choice Award 2018 in the “my best shot” category, placing it ahead of 1,694 other entrants.
She said: “I am delighted at how well the picture has done in Katie’s memory.
“She was a wonderful young lady and her light still shines.
“When I shot that image it was a very unusual day weather wise.
“The sky had turned ink black behind Katie and in front it was still glorious sunshine.
“This was taken at Ardestie near the earth houses under a very angry and unusual sky I have never seen before.
“I grabbed my camera and Katie posed in bright sunlight on the opposite side.
“It was a stunning, once-in-a-lifetime shot.
“It was taken in 2016 around the autumn – it was just over a year before she passed away.
“I only unearthed the pictures in the last month or so on a memory card.
“I decided to submit it to see what the reaction would be.”
Since uploading the picture, Jane has received praise from all over the globe.
She said: “Intially I was looking to enter more local competitions but they had closed, so I decided to enter the bigger competitions online.
“I’m absolutely overwhelmed at how it has been received.
“It has now qualified for photo of the month with voting for the competition coming to a close at the end of July.
“Katie was a very modest person so I’m not sure what her reaction would have been.
“I’ve had messages from Sri Lanka wishing me congratulations, which has just been incredible.
“I’ve been taking pictures all my life as a hobby and will consider entering more photographs in the future.”
