A man who repeatedly punched a woman in the face — causing a severe eye injury and the loss of all her upper teeth — has been spared a jail sentence.

James McVey, 46, of Waterstone Road, Brechin, was placed on a community payback order at Dundee Sheriff Court.

He was also ordered to pay his victim compensation of £750.

McVey admitted the assault, which took place as the accused, his partner and two other women shared a taxi.

The court heard all four were under the influence and started arguing.

McVey claimed that he had been struck with a glass and that was accepted by the Crown.

He admitted assaulting Helen Fraser by repeatedly punching her on the face to her injury and permanent disfigurement, at Panmure Street in Monifieth on February 25.

Sheriff Alastair Brown placed McVey on a community payback order under supervision for 11 months with unpaid work of 230 hours.
