A man accused of seriously assaulting a former Dundee FC footballer will face trial in August.
Robert Chambers, 24, of Craigmount Road, appeared at Dundee Sheriff Court today and denied assaulting John Black on October 8 last year at Old Hawkhill, by punching him on the head, causing him to fall backwards and strike his head on the ground.
The charge states Mr Black was severely injured, with the blow to his head causing permanent impairment, permanent disfigurement and endangering his life.
Chambers pleaded not guilty and his solicitor Anne Duffy intimated that she was putting forward a special defence of self-defence.
Mrs Duffy said: “We can agree much of the Crown case.”
Fiscal depute Nicola Gillespie said the Crown was ready for trial and indicated the case was expected to last for three days.
Sheriff Alastair Carmichael set a trial date of August 1 and continued his bail order.
