Emergency services were called to Riverside Drive, near to the Tay Bridge, just before 4pm.
Concerns had been raised over the welfare of the man spotted on the ledge beside the water.
A spokesman for Police Scotland confirmed a male was taken down from the wall beside the river and has since been taken to hospital for medical assessment.
He said: “Concerns were raised for a person in a precarious position on the ledge.
“It was beside the rail bridge.”
The Coastguard and and bother Broughty lifeboats were also alerted but were stood down before either of the boats had launched.
The road reopened a short time later.
