Local man ‘took £35k from dad’s bank’

A Tealing man entrusted with his dad’s finances as his next of kin has been accused of embezzling more than £35,000 from his bank account.

Steven Mooney, 45, of Mill of Brighty Farm Cottage, will face trial in February next year.

He denies that at the two TSB branches in Albert Street and Perth Road, Dundee, and elsewhere unknown, while being a person trusted as a next of kin on the bank account in the name of John Mooney, having been named on the account to assist Mr Mooney in the administration of his finances, and having gained the trust of Mr Mooney, he obtained a bank card in his own name for the account and removed £35,132.09 in cash.

A number of transactions allegedly took place without the knowledge or consent of his father, and with no intention of returning the money, embezzling the cash.

The alleged incidents took place between July 27 2012 and August 3 2015.

Trial was set down for February 14 2018, with an intermediate diet on January 23.
