A controversial £35,000 piece of art is falling to bits.
The 30ft tall sculpture on the Esplanade in Kirkcaldy, entitled Phantom, consists of a tree trunk-sized piece of driftwood covered in one million nails. Nails and rotting wood have been falling from the sculpture, which has now been fenced off amid safety fears.
Once described by its own creator, Methil-born artist David Mach, as his ugliest work yet, it was commissioned by Morrisons supermarket.
Fife Council is now in discussion with Morrisons to establish who is responsible for further risk assessments and “appropriate action”.
