Residents have described the horrific incident that has led to a police hunt for three men who brutally assaulted a man in the street before fleeing in a car.
St Kilda Road in St Mary’s was sealed off on Sunday afternoon after three youths were seen attacking a man with iron poles or crowbars before attempting to run him over in their car.
The 39-year-old victim suffered head and leg injuries and was taken to Ninewells Hospital.
The attackers made off in a red Volkswagen.
A spokesman said: “Police Scotland is investigating an incident which took place on St Kilda Road, between 6.30pm-7pm.
“A 39-year-old man was allegedly assaulted by three men who then left the area in a red Volkswagen car.
“The victim suffered head and leg injuries and was taken to Ninewells Hospital for treatment.
“Officers are following a positive line of inquiry and we would ask anyone with information which could assist the investigation to call 101 or speak anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.”
Emergency services were initially called to reports of a man being struck by a vehicle.
A cordon was erected at the junction with St Edmund Terrace and bus services were diverted along Birkdale Place while officers dealt with the incident.
One resident said the victim was seen “crawling” to the roadside after the attack.
“A local man was attacked by three youths who got out of a car and assaulted him in the street,” she said.
“Then they got back in the car and I think they ran him over or tried to run him over twice and then sped off.
“They were young, maybe late teens or early 20s, and I’d heard them arguing beforehand.
“Myself and another neighbour phoned the police and my husband went to help the man.
“He had to crawl across the road to get to safety – he couldn’t stand up. I think he had a dislocated knee.
“There was an ambulance and three police cars and a van. The police cordoned off the road and we had to give statements.”
Other residents described their shock at the “huge” police presence.
Stephen Mclennan posted online that the incident was “like a scene from CSI”.
Another resident added: “There must have been about five marked police cars, a van and two unmarked cars.”
A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We received a call at 1854 hours on Sunday to attend an incident on St Kilda Road in Dundee.
“We dispatched one ambulance to the scene and transported one patient to Ninewells.”
