A globetrotting couple are almost ready for “take two” of their epic road trip from Dundee in South Africa to the City of Discovery.
Kevin and Donna Krummeck had set off on their Dundee 2 Dundee road trip up the west coast of Africa last year to mark their 30th wedding anniversary.
However, the couple hit a snag at the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and were forced to turn back and go home.
Having now planned a new 10,000-mile route up the east coast of the continent, Kevin and Donna – from Dundee, South Africa, and Dundee, Scotland, respectively – are ready to go again.
Setting off on March 15, the adventurers hope to travel from South Africa through Mozambique, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt.
They will then board a ferry to either Turkey or Greece and drive up through Europe to Dundee.
Kevin told the Tele: “We’ve decided to go up the east coast as, for now, it seems a bit easier, as the DRC is having more drama and we want to try a different route this time. Africa is Africa, though, and you just never know when things can and will change.”
The couple’s trip – first reported by the Tele in February 2017 – will see them traverse the vast African plains both on and off road.
They have spent thousands of pounds kitting out their Land Rover Defender with a long-range fuel tank, a roof-mounted tent and toughened off-road parts.
Kevin said: “We really want to do the whole of Ireland and Skye and northern Scotland and then will decide when we will either drive back through Africa to get home to SA, or to possibly ship the van to Walvis Bay in Namibia and drive back home from there.
“We are so looking forward to seeing family in Scotland and have been inundated with messages from friendly people that we really want to meet up with.”
The couple will post updates on facebook.com/dundee2dundee.
