There will be sun, shades and ska at Magdalen Green today as WestFest 2018 bursts into life.
But there will no longer be a world record attempt at having the most number of people wearing sunglasses in one space, as previously hoped.
Nevertheless, organisers are still hoping to see a sea of yellow #SunnyDundee shades when festival gates open at 1pm tomorrow.
It is hoped the last few hundred branded sunnies will be snapped up at the festival, with all proceeds going to Maggie’s Centre at Ninewells Hospital.
A spokesman for WestFest said: “Sadly the world record attempt will not now happen, as Guinness requires a lengthy period of notice before they can put everything in place in order to ratify the record.
“However, we are still encouraging everyone to bring their #SunnyDundee shades down to the Green tomorrow and we will be selling the last available pairs at WestFest to raise funds for Maggie’s.
“There are only about 350 pairs left so festival-goers should get down early to grab theirs and help out that wonderful charity.”
Elsewhere it will be business as usual, with a top musical line-up alongside a fun fair, DJs, food stalls and a fully licensed bar.
Top of the bill are Bombskare, winners of the BBC 4 Britain’s Best Part-Time Band 2016 and self-styled “ska-juggernaut”.
Bombskare will be ably supported by Dundee covers band Coconut Groove – a collective of ex-Harris Academy pupils who have played with some of the city’s best-known musical exports, including Revolver and Kyle Falconer.
There will also be performances from Buffalo Soldiers and traditional show openers the Dundee Schools Rock Band.
There will also be a performance from the as yet unknown winner of the WestFest Battle of the Bands competition, with the final being held tonight to decide who gets to play Magdalen Green on Sunday.
The spokesman added: “Everyone at WestFest is hoping for good weather and the forecast isn’t looking too bad so everything is pointing to yet another fantastic WestFest Big Sunday in Sunny Dundee.”
WestFest 2018 runs from 1pm-7pm.
