Free nicotine patches and cash incentives to help local folk stop smoking

NHS Tayside is urging people to make giving up smoking in 2018 their new year resolution.

Community pharmacies can offer advice on how to access support to anyone who would like to quit.

Two incentive schemes are also available for people to join in Tayside, providing free nicotine products, support from a pharmacy and £12.50 per week if they remain smoke free.

Smokers can ask at their local pharmacy about whether they are eligible for the Quit4U scheme or, if pregnant, the Give it Up for Baby scheme.

Margaret Winton, NHS Tayside programme manager for tobacco, said: “A new year is the perfect opportunity to improve your health.

“We know that quitting smoking can be difficult and that sometimes it can take a few attempts to stop, so we would encourage people to find out about the support on offer.

“Go along to your local community pharmacy and they can answer any questions you have and give you up-to-date information to help you quit your way.”

Anyone who wants to stop smoking can also call the NHS Smoke Free Service on 0845 600 9996 to find out about all the ways in which NHS Tayside can help support people to become smoke free or follow the Facebook page at facebook.com/nhstaysidesmokefree

Stopping smoking can not only reduce the risk to your health but it can also improve breathing, circulation and energy levels. If you are on medication, giving up using tobacco can make medication more effective in treating your condition in most cases.

Giving up smoking is the single most important lifestyle decision that anyone can make to improve their health immediately.
