Dundee United will face Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup after they won a thrilling Highland derby on penalties last night with the score at 2-2 after extra time.
John Robertson’s men showed great steel as they twice fought back from being behind to force extra-time and then converted all of their spot-kicks in the shoot-out to go through.
A Ross Stewart header put the Dingwall men ahead in the 22nd minute but that was cancelled out by Jordan White 11 minutes after the break.
County were ahead again in 67 minutes when Michael Gardyne fired past Mark Ridgers.
However, with nine minutes remaining White grabbed his second of the match to send the game into extra-time.
Inverness went closest in the extra 30 minutes when Carl Tremarco struck the crossbar but it was penalties that decided the outcome.
Inverness converted all five of their kicks, with Declan McManus the only player who failed to score, seeing his shot saved by Ridgers.
United and Inverness will face each other in the semi-finals on Sunday, March 3 at Tannadice, with Robbie Neilson’s men also hosting the Highland side on Tuesday, February 26 in the league.
