Donations at Tesco stores across Dundee enabled thousands of meals to be provided to those in need at Christmas.
A total of 17,283 meals were donated to charities FareShare and The Trussell Trust by generous customers.
Shoppers were asked to donate long-life items and Tesco topped up customers’ donations by 20%.
Donations to foodbanks in The Trussell Trust’s network are given in emergency food parcels to people who cannot afford to feed themselves and their families.
The food donated to FareShare is distributed to charities and community groups which use it to provide meals for vulnerable groups including isolated older people and those in homeless shelters.
FareShare chief executive Lindsay Boswell said: “The food donated at the Tesco food collection will make a tremendous difference to the thousands of charities and community groups that FareShare supports.
“Thanks to the generosity of Tesco shoppers over the festive season, we have enough long-life food to provide more than 900,000 meals.”
Samantha Stapley, operations nanager at The Trussell Trust, said: “Our foodbank network has spent the last month making sure that people referred to them with no money for food didn’t go hungry at Christmas.
“Thank you for your support — your generosity has stopped hunger this Christmas.”
