Dundee restaurant which closed unexpectedly set to reopen ‘imminently’

A popular Dundee restaurant which closed its doors unexpectedly earlier this year is set to reopen “imminently”, the Tele can reveal.

The Meat House in Perth Road shut down in January without notice.

Now, however, an application is set to go before Dundee City Licensing Board on behalf of the new management.

The application is for full on and off-sales licences for the premises.

Owner of the building, Joseph McConville, confirmed that the restaurant was to re-open “imminently”.

There has been an objection to the application from West End Community Council.

It has written to the licensing board with members’ concerns, which include that they fear the application “seems to be a change to be a bar from the previous licence as a restaurant.”

Their objection adds: “This is still a residential area and turning this restaurant into a bar would lead to three in a row, one of which has an area open until 3am.”

They are also concerned that young people would be allowed to enter without an adult and claim the application is contrary to the council’s over-provision of alcohol policy.

However, Mr McConville said he wanted to reassure people that what was planned was a replacement restaurant.

He added: “This will primarily be a restaurant.

“I am happy to confirm that it will be opening imminently if licensing and other legal matters are finalised satisfactorily.

“It is too early to say who the new management will be but they are very nice people and will definitely run a respectable restaurant keeping in mind the concerns of local residents.”

Mr McConville said he could reveal the new management team already run a successful restaurant business in Dundee.

He said: “I have taken advice that I cannot reveal who the new management is just yet, but I am hoping to be able to do so in the very near future.”

When the Meat House closed in January, the move was announced on social media.

Customers who bought vouchers for the restaurant through Itison were contacted by email to inform them of a refund.

The email from the discount website firm read: “Regrettably, Meat House of Dundee has closed. We’re very sorry for the disappointment and inconvenience this will cause.”

The closure was met with shock by the boss of neighbouring pub The Braes.

At the time manager Fraser Hay told the Tele: “It comes as a shock because they always seemed quite busy, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. We had a good relationship with them.”
