A young apprentice has beaten nearly 8,000 others to be presented with a highly commended award from the SQA.
Lynsey Walker, a former pupil of Craigie High, became a business and administration apprentice at Piperdam Golf and Leisure Resort in August last year, working towards level two and level 3 SQA units.
The 18-year-old had always been fond of administration during her time at school, and after a family friend advised her of the apprenticeship opportunities at the resort she thought she would apply.
Lynsey added: “I was so nervous when I was chosen. I was coming straight from school so it was very daunting.
“After getting the job everyone at Piperdam was so welcoming and they went out of their way to help make my apprenticeship work.
“Managers would even come and pick me up to take me in to work since there were no buses running up to Piperdam.
“My trainer, Nicky Wilson, from MGT, put me forward for the SQA award without telling me.
“I was so shocked when they told me I had been shortlisted.
“To go to the Kelvingrove Art Museum for the final was amazing in itself.
“I was so proud that I came joint runner-up.
“I would like to say a massive thank you to all at Piperdam and MGT Training for helping me achieve so much during my apprenticeship.”
Piperdam’s general manager, Moira Leck said: “Lynsey is an extremely capable, well-liked employee who is very much valued by her employers and colleagues at Piperdam.
“She has used her employment and qualification to better herself and help those around her, and she has put the skills learned to good use outside of work with her various charity events.
“Piperdam are extremely proud that she was the runner-up in this year’s SQA awards.
“We are fully committed to the training of all our staff, and much emphasis is put on the successful learning journey of all of the employees.”
Many different roles involved in admin
Working life for Lynsey consists of a variety of administration roles.
She said: “There are a lot of different aspects to my job.
“I help accounts by organising time sheets and dealing with petty cash, I respond and deal with a lot of emails which relate to the business side of things and I also help out the team at reception behind the scenes.
“I really enjoy my job and would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in admin.
“If anyone is looking for a similar role who is maybe just about to finish school, I would advise them to look for apprenticeships like mine as I have learned so much and the whole team has been a fantastic support.
“I definitely want to continue working here.”
