Sixty years, 21,900 days, 525,000 hours.
Last Thursday, these figures signified the length of time since Dundee couple Jim and Isabella Martin were married.
Jim and Isabella Martin had been married.
They first met at Camperdown Park in 1953 when Jim was 20 and Isabella was just 18.
Isabella describes that chance encounter as “love at first sight”.
“I was on a walk round Camperdown Park and Jim was there playing football with his friends,” she said.
“The ball came rolling over and landed at my feet. When I saw Jim coming over, my heart was booming.
“From then on our love flourished.”
Five years later, after Jim proposed in Dublin, the happy couple were married at the High Kirk in Dundee on July 19 1958.
In preparation for the big day, Jim lost a stone in weight, which he claims was due to all the worry.
Isabella looked stunning in a white lace ballerina-style dress which she says still has “tomato stains down the front”.
Jim and Isabella went on to have two sons and a daughter, and 10 grandchildren have followed.
Isabella said: “Family has always been first and foremost in our life and to this day we still have a close bond with our family.
“We enjoy cruises and have travelled the world, with our children occasionally joining us.”
Sixty years is a long time but Jim and Isabella say the secret behind how long they have stayed together so long is very easy.
“Our marriage has been based on love, trust and happiness,” said Isabella.
“The problem with couples these days is that they just don’t trust each other.
“For us it was love at first sight and to this day we still care so much about each other.”
The Martins will be celebrating their anniversary with friends and family at Invercarse Hotel next week.
