“My job allows me to help heal and comfort others who are going through grief.”
Karen Docherty, 42, has arguably one of the most unusual jobs that we have featured in this column. She is a spirit medium full time.
From her studio, Sacred Spirit in Carnoustie, she is able to give messages from those who have passed away to those who were closest to them.
Karen has been able to connect to the spirit world her whole life but only began developing the skill about seven years ago.
She said: “I really began my development seven years ago when I travelled down south to meet with Tony Stockwell.
“He noticed straight away that I had the ability to be a great medium so he became my first teacher.
“I then became a guest on the Scottish dates of his tour.
“People think that you can either talk to the spirit or you can’t – and while not everyone has the ability to, if you can connect with the spirit world you need to develop your skills and gain understanding of what they are communicating to you.
“For instance if a spirit shows me a sandcastle I know that means someone has been married in a castle. However, you need to work at it to be able to gain that understanding.”
Whilst Karen appreciates there is now a greater understanding and interest in mediumship, there are people who see it as a “circus act”.
Mediums are especially in the spotlight now as it is portrayed on a bigger platform with TV programmes dedicated to the skill.
“There is such a big interest in this kind of work that it has become incredibly accessible with people even going live on social media, but I feel that takes away the personal aspect of it.
“I try to give very personal details to people so they know I am telling the truth and I am reputable.
“I have even been featured in magazines who have done “psychic under the spotlight” tests and gave me full marks for accuracy.
“I feel incredibly lucky that I am able to do this job. I get really emotional but you can’t not get emotional!
“I have ladies who sit opposite me in a state of grief and I feel anyone who comes to my events or for a one-to-one session is hurting or grieving and I am able to help those people. I am doing this to bring comfort to people and to help heal them and that is really important to me.
“I wouldn’t change my ability at all, I love it.”
‘I travel the world teaching mediumship’
As well as providing spiritual readings Karen also teaches mediumship to those who have the ability.
She said: “I can instantly tell if someone is a medium or has the ability to be, I don’t know why, it’s just a connection.
“I travel the world teaching mediums and also have regular students here in the studio. About 80% of those students are here because I have picked up that they have the ability.
“I also do online teaching, so if anyone believes they could have the ability to reach the spirit world they should get in contact to develop their skill further.”
Karen will be on stage at the Whitehall Theatre on Wednesday June 27.
Tickets are priced at £16 and can be purchased from the box office.
