Scotland Women’s striker Lana Clelland revealed her dream has come true after she helped the team create history by reaching the World Cup Finals for the first time in their history.
A 2-1 win away to Albania on Tuesday saw Shelley Kerr’s side clinch their place.
Now the squad is all set for the finals in France next year.
Speaking to the Tele from her Italian base, Lana, from Tibbermore on the outskirts of Perth, said: “This is a dream come true. Getting to the World Cup Finals is all I’ve ever wanted.
“Right from the time I was a girl at Methven primary school I wanted to play at the highest level possible.
“It’s been a long road from Tibbermore to France but it’s been a great journey, one which started kicking a ball about in the Perthshire countryside.”
Lana, 25, played for her primary school and her goalscoring came to the attention of Perth’s Letham set-up and she started cracking in goals for them.
She kept that going at Rangers Ladies and Spartans Ladies before switching her talents to the women’s Serie A in Italy and stints with Bari and Tavagnacco before pitching up at Fiorentina where she is playing Champions League football this season, starting next Wednesday when Danes Fortuna Hjorring visit Florence.
At Tavagnacco, Lana was the leading Serie A scorer one season.
Describing her feelings when she knew Scotland had made it to the world finals, Lana went on: “It was very emotional. We were all screaming and it was the best feeling ever. Nothing so far has topped that.
“It was just wonderful knowing we were in the finals, achieving something that had never before been done.
“A lot of hard work has taken us to this stage and that hard work will continue.”
Lana paid tribute to those who have helped her on her road to the finals.
“When I was at Letham, the late Ken Drummond was a major influence on my career.
“He did a great job promoting women’s and girls football and gave encouragement to all the players.
“My family are also very supportive.
“My folks drove me around to games and my family back me all the way.
“And playing at top level in Italy and being in a great Scotland side has made it all worthwhile.
“Now for the finals.”
