Dundee United manager Csaba Laszlo has welcomed new chairman Mike Martin to the club but insists it’s up to the players to make the club a success.
Csaba said he was “sad” to see Stephen Thompson leave, and with it a family tradition at the club, but is keen to ensure the change at the top doesn’t affect anything negatively on the pitch.
He said: “If you go out on the pitch as a player no one asks who is the new chairman.
“Everybody is asking for you to play football, to bring results, take home three points and look for the next game.
“This is the most important message, the chairman isn’t on the pitch — we are there with the players and we have to deliver for Dundee United.”
On Thompson’s departure as chairman, Csaba said: “I was really sad about this when I heard he was moving out of the club.
“I was committed to our now ex-chairman and he was here for a very long time.
“He took over a job that was not easy. It was a family tradition for him and the Thompsons. Given the family’s history, it is not easy to make this decision.
“I know people had different opinions about him but this is mine.
“We talked about it and when he told me it was quite an emotional time. This wasn’t just a conversation between employee and chairman. It was deeper than that and more emotional.
“I was thinking at that moment: ‘Why are you doing this?’
“I thought it may be necessary for him to stay because of his family link to the club.
“I have a high respect for him and wish him well for the future.”
Now, however, he has a new boss at Tannadice in banker Mike Martin, who was voted in as new chairman last Friday.
“There is someone new coming in who has his own ideas,” Csaba added.
“Just as I was committed to the former chairman now I am committed to the new one, as well as to the club.
“That is my message and I hope we can move forward now in a positive direction.
“I hope everything will be positive and I know he and the board want the best for United.”
Tonight’s home clash with Queen of the South was called off yesterday due to a waterlogged pitch.
