Creepy clown craze: Police called after alarm at Dundee park

Fintry Bridge at Finlathen Park.

A global “creepy clown” craze has hit Dundee.

Police were called to a park twice in two nights amid reports of a group of youths wearing masks and alarming locals.

Officers attended Finlathen Park on Thursday around 7.30pm while residents also reported seeing police in the area the night before.

In some incidents around the globe, people in clown masks have been frightening motorists in passing cars while some have approached schoolchildren.

Residents in the Finlathen Park area told the Tele that they had seen groups of people roaming Fintry’s streets wearing masks.

Bridget Sandman, 71, said she saw about eight youngsters wearing clown masks on Wednesday night “making a complete nuisance” of themselves.

She added: “They were running around in the middle of the road.

“They were wearing clown masks and were being a proper nuisance for drivers in the streets.”

Another person said they were stopped at Fintry Bridge by police on Thursday.

She said: “Police with torches just stopped me on the Fintry Bridge asking if we had seen any clowns.”

James Harper, 57, said he saw police with the CCTV camera van searching the area around Fintry Bridge.

He said: “They were there for about half an hour but I couldn’t see what they were looking for.”

Mr Harper said his son came in shortly afterwards and he had said there was a big crowd of young people hanging about the streets in the area.

Ron Neave, chairman of the Fintry Community Council, said: “It is definitely something to be concerned about.

“I thought we had got rid of gangs in the area a few years ago, but I think we’re seeing them start to return.”

A police spokeswoman said: “Police Scotland can confirm that there was a report of concern regarding a group of young people in Finlathen Park, Dundee, at about 7.30pm yesterday, some of whom were reported to have been wearing clown masks.

“Inquiries were made and there was no criminality identified.”

The rise of the creepy craze has been boosted by social media.
