VIDEO: Coastguard helicopter searches for person in River Tay as bridge reopens

A Coastguard helicopter has began searching the River Tay following an incident at Dundee Waterfront.

Police closed off the crossing for a short time around 4.30pm – but has since reopened.

It’s understood the incident concerned reports of someone in the water and emergency services are frantically trying to locate them.


A chopper has since been searching along the river from the V&A westwards towards the rail bridge.

RNLI volunteers and members of the Coastguard are also assisting in the search efforts.

A spokesman for the RNLI said: “Both Broughty Ferry RNLI lifeboats are involved in a search west of the Tay Road Bridge following reports of someone in the water.

“The call to RNLI came in at 4.08pm with the inshore lifeboat launching at 4.13pm and the all-weather lifeboat following six minutes later.

“They have been joined by the search and rescue helicopter.”

It’s not yet clear the condition of the person reported to be in the Tay.
