A pensioner says he was “lucky to get away with his life” after he was knocked out from behind in a £40 street robbery.
Chris King, 73, had been enjoying a night playing dominos at Club 83 when he got a taxi back to his Arklay Terrace home in the early hours of Thursday June 7.
Due to roadworks, Chris said he got out of the taxi at the top of Court Street and was walking down to his house when he was struck from behind and robbed of £40.
Chris said he woke up in hospital – where he was told that he would have been dead if it wasn’t for a good Samaritan raising the alarm as he lay on the ground.
The retired postman said: “I was walking along and the last thing I remember is taking a big blow to the back of the head. I must have gone right down and landed on my face – I think my nose is broken and my face is a mess.
“They took £40 off me and left me lying there. I am just glad that they didn’t have a knife on them – I am lucky to even be here.
“People just don’t care any more, I just can’t stop thinking that it would have been the end if they did have a knife.
“I woke up in the hospital and they told me what had happened.
“It was around 1.30am when it happened – I don’t think there would have been anyone around to see it.
“I don’t know if there was more than one person.
“It has made me not want to go out at the weekends any more.”
Chris said he wants to thank the man who came to his aid for saving his life.
He added: “I don’t know who he was or anything about him but he phoned an ambulance for me. They said I was really lucky that he did and I would have probably died out there if he hadn’t.
“Whoever he is I just want to thank him for what he did. I could have been left to die – the person could have had a knife. I am just lucky all around that I am still here.”
Chris was given treatment and stayed overnight in Ninewells Hospital and then was allowed to return home, although he still has cuts on his face.
Chris said he hopes that the police catch the culprits before they strike again.
