A Dundee man freed on bail over a child abuse images charge – who then groomed a series of under-age YouTubers into sending him sexual images while he awaited sentence – has been jailed.
Jed Cossans was sentenced on his original indecent images charge just days after trying to convince a nine-year-old boy on the video streaming site to send him pictures.
A court heard Cossans was arrested over two of the charges –but was allowed to walk free despite already being on bail for the first abuse pictures charge at the time, allowing him to target the third child.
Cossans, 23, of Arbroath Road, pleaded guilty on indictment to three charges of sending sexual written communications to children between June 24 – 26 and on July 3 and 4 last year, and again between February 10 – 12 last year.
Fiscal depute Eilidh Robertson told Dundee Sheriff Court the first victim, aged 12, was contacted by Cossans, who had seen a video the boy had posted in which he had exposed himself.
The second boy was just 11 and contacted on video chat by Cossans while the third, aged just nine, was first contacted over Instagram, with Cossans posing as a 16-year-old girl. Sheriff Linda Smith jailed Cossans for 16 months and imposed a 20–month supervised release order.
He was also placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely.
Beth Morrison, who has backed the Tele’s Our Kids Need Justice Campaign, condemned the sentence given to Cossans.
Beth, from Monifieth – whose eight-year campaign resulted in the Scottish Government producing new guidelines over the restraint of children in schools – said: “This sentence isn’t nearly long enough.
“He has been given 16 months but could be back on the street in half that.
“The sentence should be longer.”
