A late Aidan Fitzpatrick winner for Partick Thistle effectively killed off Dundee United’s faint title hopes as they downed the Terrors 2-1 at Firhill.
Former United man Scott McDonald had given the hosts the lead on four minutes with a diving header from an angled Joe Cardle cross.
In the second half, the Jags had a penalty claim turned down by referee Alan Newlands as McDonald was felled in the box by Mark Connolly on 56 minutes.
It again looked like Newlands was going to point to the spot on 71 minutes as Thistle’s Miles Storey cleared out Jamie Robson in the box but instead gave a corner to United.
Nicky Clark then equalised with a curling free-kick on 76 minutes but it wasn’t enough as sub Fitzpatrick got the winner with time ticking down.
In added time, United sub Pavol Safranko saw his header chalked off for offside.
The Tangerines’ defeat was coupled with Championship leaders Ross County’s 2-0 win against Morton. The gap to the top now stands at eight points with nine games remaining for Robbie Neilson’s men.
County have a game in hand.
