A group of cyclists have completed a 400-mile ride from Tayside to Cheshire to raise money for a charity which aims to develop a cure for a rare disease.
The team cycled from Carnoustie to the market town of Macclesfield to raise money for Reverse Rett, an organisation which is researching the rare MECP2 duplication syndrome.
They had named the trip “From Blake To Charlie” in honour of Carnoustie tot Blake McMillan and young Charlie Walton – both of whom have the rare condition – and were supported by Blake’s mum, Jenny.
The cyclists have now completed the full 400-mile trip with Charlie’s mum Fiona and Jenny following in a van.
The pair were in Macclesfield to welcome the team as they arrived on Sunday – a “humbling” moment, according to Jenny.
She said: “Watching the team come through the finish line was very emotional – there were definitely quite a number of tears.
“During the past five days they had been to hell and back, and I’m quite sure they regretted their decision to take part in the challenge a good few times. However, there were so many laughs and great times had along the way and once they crossed the finish line, I know they were so glad they took part. I can never thank them enough for this.”
Fiona, 32, added: “There were some points where we weren’t sure if everyone was going to finish – our chat group was full of messages saying: ‘We can’t do this’.
“But everyone who started made it to the end – including the one girl in the group, who was a real trooper. I love them all for what they’ve done.”
She added that Jenny – who has campaigned for MECP2 research for several years – has become a “firm friend”.
She added: “It was an honour to spend six days with her. She’s such an inspiration. She was a rock.”
In all, the team have raised £15,000 – more than three times the original target of £5,000 – not including a £1,000 donation from a pharmaceutical company direct to Reverse Rett.
The charity thanked the cyclists on Facebook, writing: “Thank you all for your amazing support.”
