Dundee ended rivals Dundee United’s nine-match winning run as they earned a 1-1 Championship draw at Tannadice Park.
Runaway Scottish Championship leaders Dundee United went ahead through Nicky Clark and enjoyed the bulk of the chances, but veteran Graham Dorrans earned the Dark Blues a point with his second-half strike.
United took an early lead when Clark converted Jamie Robson’s cross after five minutes.
Calum Butcher fired wide for the hosts, while at the other end Benjamin Siegrist twice denied Paul McGowan.
Louis Appere forced a smart save from Dundee goalkeeper Jack Hamilton and Butcher headed wide as the home side failed to extend their advantage before half-time.
They were made to pay for their missed chances when former West Brom midfielder Dorrans equalised five minutes after the interval, stroking home a left-footed effort for his first goal for the club.
Lawrence Shankland failed to add to his 22 goals this season when he headed wide from six yards after 65 minutes and – moments later – Hamilton denied Clark.
Substitute Adrian Sporle almost played in Paul McMullan in the closing stages but the forward was crowded out as the Tangerines sought a winner.
The visitors almost snatched victory when Andrew Nelson’s header was kept out by Siegrist before Shankland forced a good save from Hamilton – but neither side could find a winner.
The results leaves United 14 points clear at the top, while Dundee are up to third after extending their unbeaten run to four league games.
