Mark Cooper said Forest Green will continue pushing for automatic promotion until it is “physically impossible” after his side checked the momentum of Tranmere’s own bid with a 1-0 victory at Prenton Park.
Junior Mondal scored early in the second half for the visitors and, despite having to withstand an onslaught of pressure from Micky Mellon’s side, the Cotswolds outfit held on for all three points.
Victory reinforces Forest Green’s play-off standing and leaves them five points off the automatic spots, a point behind Tranmere with three games to go.
Cooper said: “We’ve been really good away from home. For 70 minutes we’ve been really good, outstanding with the ball and difficult to get at.
“Once we score we stopped playing a little bit. We allowed Tranmere to get at us but credit to Tranmere, they had a right go as you’d expect. They’re a team that have done really well.
“We’ve managed to withstand a barrage at the end, but overall we were good value.
“It was a brilliant goal from Junior, a young lad who we’ve got from Whitby Town in the Northern Premier League, and hopefully with us he’s got a good future.
“We seem to do well in the big games and the way we play helps that. We’re quite calm with the ball and it seems to help us.
“Funny things happen, don’t they? The teams up there have got tough games, so we’ll keep going until it’s physically impossible (to get automatic promotion).”
Despite the hosts’ relentless late pressure, they could not carve out an equaliser.
Mellon said: “The ‘keeper has made a couple of good saves at crucial times for them when it maybe might have changed the course of the game.
“All of the momentum was with us for probably the last half an hour.
“We’re obviously disappointed with the goal. The boy’s finished it well but we would be having a look at where we were when the ball comes across on the edge of the box like that.
“It was two teams going at it, trying to get a valuable three points. We just weren’t able to get that wee bit of fine margins that you need in games like this to go our way and when we did get in, we just didn’t get the rub of the green.”
