PlayStation is to begin allowing players to change the handle they use as their ID on the PlayStation Network online gaming platform.
The gaming firm has announced it will soon begin testing the feature as part of its PlayStation Preview Program, making it available first to users who have previously registered as testers for other PlayStation software betas.
This will be followed by a full rollout in “early 2019”.
PlayStation users have been long calling for the ability to change their name, with many complaining of having been stuck with an out-of-date handle for years.
During the preview programme, the firm said users would be able to change their name as many times as they wish. The first change is free, but each additional change after that will cost 10 US dollars, or five dollars for PlayStation Plus members.
“When you change your online ID, you will have the option to display your previous ID with your new ID, so your friends can recognise you,” PlayStation wrote in a blog post.
“Once you decide to display your old ID or not, you won’t be able to adjust this after completing the online ID change process.”
