Employers sign up to scheme to help women return to work in financial services

Seven employers have signed up for a programme to help women return to skilled jobs in the financial services industry.

RBS, Standard Life Aberdeen, Prudential, TSB, BNP Paribas Securities Services, Independent Women and Hymans Robertson will provide three-month paid placements to help experienced professional women back into skilled employment.

The Returners to Financial Services Scotland Programme is run by Women Returners with support from the Scottish Government’s Returners Fund.

It will see women take on a paid professional placement between April and July next year to refresh their skills and experience and equip them for employment.

They will be given a mentor and participate in a workshop-based coaching programme, while employers will be provided with support from Women Returners.

Jamie Hepburn, Minister for Employability and Training, said: “This project is funded through our returners programme, which is part of our work to identify and address the issues preventing women re-entering the workforce following a career break, particularly rebuilding skills, knowledge and confidence.

“It also helps employers appreciate the benefits gained from recruiting and retaining skilled, experienced staff.”

Jeni Burton, senior resourcing manager at RBS, said: “The core foundation of any successful business is its people.

“We recognise how important it is to encourage and drive an inclusive environment by offering access to opportunities to diverse groups, including senior female professionals looking to come back to the workplace, and that we need to invest in this existing talent to really be a bank of the future.”

Hazel Little, coaching and programme manager at Women Returners, said it would “kick-start” the growth of returnships in financial services sector.

She said: “There are however still many more who are yet to commit to this important programme.

“Interested financial services companies must act now and sign up to ensure they don’t miss out on experienced, qualified and diverse candidates who will make a considerable positive impact on their business.”
