Defender Gavin Gunning has kicked his last ball for Dundee United.
The Irishman has paid the price for Saturday’s bizarre incident that saw him pick up the ball during open play in the 2-0 defeat to Caley Thistle.
It emerged he had injured his knee and wanted to come off the field, but fans were furious at the way the 25-year-old had halted the game.
He took stick as he headed for the dressing room and reacted by ironically clapping those who were booing.
It is understood he was called to a meeting today and told he would not be considered for selection between now and the end of his short-term contract which runs out this month.
A brief statement from the club read: “Gavin Gunning has left Dundee United by mutual consent. This is a private matter and the club will not make any further comment.”
