Robbie Muirhead could be in for a quick return to Dundee United action in the Scottish Cup trip to Airdrie.
Muirhead only returned from a four-month loan spell at Partick Thistle at the beginning of the week but gaffer Mixu Paatelainen is giving serious consideration to using him at New Broomfield.
“Robbie is fit and well and is a player who can make things happen, so yes he’s absolutely in my thoughts,” confirmed Mixu.
But, while Muirhead has added to the options up front, suspensions and injury have given United a defensive headache.
Callum Morris is still injured while Ryan McGowan and Gavin Gunning are both suspended.
McGowan was red-carded as United went out to Celtic at the quarter-final stage last season.
And the booking Gunning picked up in the final minute of the 2014 final against St Johnstone means he still has a ban to serve.
Despite those selection problems and recent poor form, Mixu is relishing the challenge of facing League One Airdrie.
“Cup competitions are exciting.
“Airdrie will say what a good chance they have against a Dundee United whose confidence is low, who are not winning matches and this is a great chance for them. They’ll smell blood.
“But we see the cup competition as an oppor-tunity to go and progress and build some confidence.”
