A Dundee man, who was accused of mocking the 1971 Ibrox disaster on Twitter, will not face court action due to “a lack of evidence”.
The post on Twitter allegedly appeared in response to the low turnout of fans at Rangers’ Scottish League Cup quarter final tie against St Johnstone, which was broadcast live on TV in October last year.
The message, which was reportedly posted before the match — won 1-0 by Rangers — said that the Ibrox stands were largely empty because fans “had great difficulty using the stairs again”.
The tweet had a photograph of a newspaper reporting the 1971 disaster, which killed 66 fans and left more than 200 injured due to a crush on a stairway as supporters tried to leave the stadium.
A 19-year-old Dundee United fan was charged with posting the tweet, which was later deleted.
But a spokesman for the Crown Office said that they had poured over the evidence since being made aware of the charges last November and confirmed no further action would be taken.
He said: “The procurator fiscal at Dundee received a report concerning a 19-year-old male in connection with an alleged incident on November 3 2014.
“After full and careful consideration of the facts and circumstances of the case, the procurator fiscal decided there was insufficient admissible evidence to raise criminal proceedings at this time.”
The teenager was an employee at Dundee’s Michelin factory at the time of the alleged tweet and the business was bombarded with more than 50 calls demanding he be sacked.
Social networks and message boards were immediately awash with angry responses, with groups as far away as Liverpool reporting the matter to police.
An internal investigation was launched by Michelin into the alleged conduct of their employee and they insisted they were treating the allegation “very seriously”.
Donald Mackenzie, factory personnel manager, said today: “I can confirm that the man is an employee of Michelin Tyre plc.
“This issue is a matter for him and the Crown Office. We have no further comment to make at this stage.”
Among the victims of the 1971 Ibrox disaster were five schoolmates from the town of Markinch in Fife.
The disaster occurred when some Rangers fans left the stadium when Celtic scored in the 90th minute of an Old Firm derby.
