Shelley Louise Barnett has scooped the Tele’s £10,000 Golden Ticket, while her poor partner Marc was left looking enviously on with his win – a Wispa chocolate bar.
Shelley Louise, 35, usually shops at Sainsbury’s but, in a stroke of luck, went shopping at Morrisons on Friday with Marc, 50, and picked up her daily paper with the golden ticket inside.
The couple, who live in Whitfield, said it was the perfect gift for them after Marc’s heart attack three years ago turned their lives upside down.
Shelley Louise said: “I usually go to Sainsbury’s, but we just happened to go to Morrisons for the shopping on Friday and thank goodness we did.
“As we were leaving my partner said he would get one too because of the competition.
“We went into the car opened our tickets and he said he had won a Wispa and I turned around and said ‘well I’ve just won the £10,000 ticket’.
“But although it was there right in front of me I didn’t think I had won it for some reason.
“I thought I had won a share with other people of a £10,000 ticket, but even so, it was a shock.
“I said to Marc ‘I can’t have won £10,000, surely not’.
“So we drove home and we were just laughing and smiling at the thought of having won.”
The couple still can’t believe they’ve taken the top prize as they’ve never won anything with such a high value before and are looking forward to treating themselves to a holiday.
Shelley Louise said: “I’ve won small amounts of money like £50 at the casino before, but never something as much as this.
“I went up to the office on Friday to get the huge cardboard cheque but it still doesn’t feel real, I’ve been in a total daze all weekend.
“It probably sounds boring but the first thing we are going to do is buy a fridge freezer as ours has broken down.
“I think we will also go away for two or three days to Amsterdam. I went over in March for the first time and loved it and my partner has been before too.”
Following Marc’s heart attack, the couple are now hoping to start a family and the £10,000 will give them a welcome boost.
She said: “My partner works so hard and he had a heart attack three years ago, so I think he really deserved this.
“He was off work for quite a while and it was a really tough time for us. We’re still trying to get back on track and I’m not saying we deserve it more than anyone else, but it will be such a help to us. I’ll make sure I spoil him.
“I think we will save a bit of money as well as we are trying for a baby so it would be good to have some set aside for that.”
Second Tele contained an even sweeter prize!
Dundee dad Symon Mathieson revealed it was second time lucky as he scooped £1,000 in the Tele’s Golden Giveaway.
Symon was the first person to call and claim cash from our £50,000 prize fund.
Simon, a blind fitter, from Ellengowan Drive, off Arbroath Road, declared the sum “the icing on the cake” for a Friday.
He initially won a bar of chocolate in our massive competition — then picked up a second paper which contained an even sweeter prize.
“I bought a Tele in town and won a bar of chocolate,” recalled the 35-year-old.
“Then when I was in the newsagent in Broughty Ferry Road heading home I decided to buy another one, just in case I was lucky again. It’s the best 50p I’ve ever spent!
“I’m very excited at this totally unexpected bonus.”
Symon plans to use the money to take his wife Rosie and daughters Nicole, 15 and Casey, 12, on a caravan holiday to Ayr in October.
