A dog was run down and killed in Carnoustie in the early hours of yesterday morning.
The silver Yorkshire Terrier was in the middle of the road on Dundee Street, not far from The Open bar around 5.30am when efforts to chase it off the road failed and it was hit by an early morning taxi.
The partner of the Good Samaritan who attempted to save the dog said she was distraught that his attempts failed.
The woman took to social media to say: “He really tried his best to usher the dog off the road and stop the taxi. As dog lovers we are distraught by the actions of the taxi.
“My partner had to leave to go to work but he asked if I could post a message on Facebook to see if we would trace the owner and get them to contact the police.”
She said the dog had no collar or tag.
The taxi company understood to have been involved declined to comment.
A Police Scotland spokesoman confirmed that a Yorkshire Terrier had been knocked down and had died at the scene.
