St Johnstone have been linked with Frenchman John-Christophe Ayina, who netted five times in 17 appearances for Racing Santander last year.
He has recently been on trial at Osasuna and Inverness Caley Thistle.
The Highlanders were, reportedly, keen to sign him but the deal fell through.
Should he be selected for Saints’ home match against Aberdeen on Saturday, defender Steven Anderson will be making his 273rd appearance for the side.
He could become Saints’ all-time record appearance holder by the end of this season.
Alan Main is the present record holder with 308 appearances.
Former Saints skipper Jim Weir believes his former team-mate has what it takes to be a major player for Saints for some time to come.
“Steven has a great desire to keep on improving,” said Jim.
“Not only that but he is a player who works very hard at his game.
“He has a passion and a commitment that is second to none.
“John Connolly was the manager who signed Ando and it was a great piece of business.
“He’s played under a few managers and has done well for all of them.”
