Cup final fever is hitting the tangerine half of Dundee.
From special cakes and sausages to Shed Shades and a special luxury limo trip to Parkhead, the city’s business community is rallying behind Dundee United as they take on St Johnstone in Glasgow on Saturday.
Spex Pistols in Hawkhill have sold thousands of orange and black Shed Shades after selling out of Gavin Rae-Bans last week as Dundee fought for the Championship title.
Owner Richard Cook said: “They have been amazingly popular. Cup final day is usually very sunny and we don’t want people sitting in the sun getting a headache.”
He added that Stevie May-farer sunglasses are also available for St Johnstone fans.
Kerry-Anne Scott, supervisor at Nicoll’s Rosebank Bakery who are selling walnut whips, tea cakes and sponges with United badges and colouring, said: “We’ve had them in since the start of the week and they’ve sold really well.
“We’re wanting to support our local team and we hope they win.
“There have been orders from people for the trip down on the buses on Saturday and Dundee United themselves have even picked up a big order.”
Family-owned bakers Goodfellow and Steven are selling special cup final empire biscuits and fondant cakes in the run-up to Saturday’s game.
Director Martin Goodfellow said: “The city will be buzzing well, half of it anyway and as a local business it’s good to get involved and have a bit of fun with customers.
“These things go down well generally and we’ll have a good supply of pies too.”
Their Perth branches have also stocked up on St Johnstone-theme sweet treats.
One lucky group of Arabs will be travelling down to Celtic Park in style in a stretched Hummer limousine decked out in tangerine, courtesy of Dundee Limos.
They will be treated to bottles of bubbly, chocolates and soft drinks as they are chauffeured to Glasgow in comfort.
Lindsay Mitchell, of Dundee Limos, said: “We’ve had a lot of requests but, unfortunately, due to the timing of the semi-final, we were already booked up for weddings and things.”
Grossett’s The Butcher has produced special tangerine and black sausages and the Tele has been doing its bit as well by giving away hundreds of free foam fingers in the Wellgate.
